How Does NGC Work

National Green Corps (NGC) is a major initiative of Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change. It was launched in the year 2001. NGC targets the school children and calls them as the “early adopters”. Government of India hopes to sow the seeds of conservation awareness/ invoke the masses across the country by triggering a chain reaction starting from school to society to decision makers from school to village/town to city, state to country. The objective of the Programme is to establish “National Green Army”.

EMPRI is the Nodal Agency for NGC in Karnataka, since January 2009

Eco-clubs each year undertake various activities at three levels.

  1. Awareness based activities:

  • Rally

  • Jathas

  • Expert talks

  • Educative Films

  • Seminars

  1. Observation based activities:

  • Survey outings

  • Data collection

  • Record keeping

  1. Action oriented activities:

  • Plantations

  • Vermicomposting

  • Water and energy conservation

  • Sanitation

Government of India sanctions Rs-5000/- per eco-club, to inculcate the activities and sow the seeds of awareness to establish clean and safe environment.  Each eco-club possesses 30-50 students per NGC School. District implementation and monitoring Committee (DIMC) would be established to facilitate the Programme in each district including training for in-charge teachers to follow up actions, periodical monitoring the overall plan and implementation.

State Steering Committee (SSC) would give overall direction/guide for NGC implementation in the respective State /UT and ensures linkages at all levels. Besides these annual disbursements, financial assistance for Training of Master Trainers, teacher’s in-charge, and distribution of resource materials is also provided to States / UTs on need basis.
